Seven Ways To Boost Your Reading Habit

Eiyo lovelies,

Welcome back to Fadima Mooneira Blogspot. I am back with a new post. How are you guys doing? I hope you guys are doing great.

For today's post, I would like to share with you guys some tips to boost or improve your reading habit. But before I share with you guys my tips, let me ask you two questions...

Q1: What is the definition of reading habit?

According to Gupta, Sood, Chhering, and Mukherjee (2014), reading habit is a behavior which expresses the lightness of reading for individual, which occurs regularly of leisure reading approach, type of reading, the taste of reading, and the use of library services. Reading habit is an intellectual activity for giving more information, knowledge, and learn various types of things.

Q2: Why is reading important for us?

According to dansilvestre.com, reading is important for us because...

1) it helps us to upgrade our brain,
2) reading makes us an interesting person,
3) reading opens windows to other worlds,
4) reading improves memory and concentration, and
5) reading is one of the best tools to fight stress.

As a bookworm, I believe that these reasons stated by dansilverstre.com are true. But unfortunately, not all people are into reading nowadays. Not all people realize that reading is important for our self-development.  Those who do not love to read will always say that they are too busy to read, have no time, and get bored easily with books.

So that's why I decide to share some of my tips to boost reading habit in today's post with you guys. I have seven tips to share with you guys. Now let's get started...

#1 SET TIME

Tip no.1 is for those who always said they are too busy and have no time to read. I believe it is important for you guys to set time for yourself to read. However, you don't have to push yourself too hard. Just one hour a day would be ok. You can choose anytime to read during your days. Maybe in the morning, during lunch break, afternoon, or night.  For me, I usually read at night before bedtime. I always spend at least 30 minutes or one hour to read before I go to bed. Besides before bedtime, I also love to read during weekend afternoons.

#2 READ DIFFERENT GENRES

As a bookworm, I know that some people have their favorite genres to read. Not everyone enjoys reading all genres. I know that some people only read one genre. Am I right? But reading one genre can make you get bored with reading. I also experienced this once. So besides reading one genre, why not read different genres? If you just finished reading a romance novel, why not read a spy-thriller next? Reading different genres will help you to boost your reading habit. It also makes reading fun. Plus, reading different genres will make you more knowledgable.

#3 READ DIFFERENT LANGUAGES

To those who speak more than one languages, you can try tip no.3. Like me, I am a Bahasa Malaysia and English speaker. So I read both languages- Bahasa Malaysia and English. Reading different language books or articles will also help you with your language skills.

#4 BLOG ABOUT WHAT YOU READ

If you are a book blogger, you can write reviews and share your opinions on what you read. Blogging about a book you read, will also help you to make friends with other bookworms around the world. Trust me, this is a fun activity to do.

#5 HAVE A LOG BOOK/READING JOURNAL

If you're not a book blogger, who can try tip no.5 to boost your reading habit. You can get yourself a reading journal and write about what you read in it. Retailers like Typo sells this kind of journal. However, you can also use a plain notebook and transform it into a reading journal. I used to have a reading journal before I became a blogger.

#6 JOIN COMMUNITIES

One of the best ways to boost reading habit is to make friends with bookworms and talk about the book you read. But since not many people are into books (especially in Malaysia) nowadays, it is quite hard to find a bookworm friend. So I would like to suggest you to join Book Communities. Tip no.6 will help to make friends with bookworms and be able to share your reading passion.

#7 READ A BOOK THAT TELLS YOU THINGS YOU WANTED TO KNOW

One of my creative writing mentors, Mr. Uthaya Sandkar mentioned  - "Don't just write what you already know. Write about what you wanted to know". I believe this would also be the same for reading. So don't just read what you already know. Read about what you wanted to know. Reading something new will gained you new knowledge.

Ok, so these are my seven tips to boost reading habit. I hope you guys find these tips helpful. I hope you guys will have the initiative to boost your reading habit.

Before I end this post, let me share with you guys a famous quote by Malaysia's fourth and seventh Prime Minister - Tun Dr. Mahathir Mohamad.....

"Don't be stingy to buy books" - Tun Dr. Mahathir Mohamad

Ok, that's all for now. Thank you for reading. Hope to see you guys again soon.

XoXo,

Fadima Mooneira ^_^

  11. Hi Fadima. Some great tips there to help us boost our reading habits. I must admit though, I do mainly stick to one or two genres - there is no way that I would enjoy reading a romantic novel!

  12. YES! These are some great reading tips! And super yes to reading in different genres! My basic philosophy is, if a book is recommended to me by a friend, any book, I'll go ahead and give it a read. And because of that, I've been exposed to so many amazing books from all sorts of genres! My biggest problem though is making the time to read, ha ha. I love that it's your first suggestion here, cause it's definitely my biggest hurdle. Great suggestions!
