THE INTERVIEW

1) When did you first start reading for pleasure?

I think when I was in middle school. I bought my first novel with my own allowance. I pick it up because the cover was cute. When I read it, it’s really fun and entertaining. Something that I really enjoy doing in my spare time after school. Since then, I’m in love with the whole fictional world.

2) What is the first book/novel you read?

It’s “Mates, Dates, and Inflatable Bras”, by Cathy Hopkins. The story was light and very relatable to me as a teen at that time. After that, I bought the whole book of the Mates, Dates series.

3) What genre do you read?

In my teenage days, I was only interested in a fictional novels. But now, I kind of enjoying many kinds of books. Fiction, traveling, history, self-improvement, etc. For fiction itself, I like young adults' romantic stories and fantasy fiction.

4) Do you judge a book by its cover?

Yes, sometimes I would impulsively buy any novel with a cute cover or the one I feel like interesting. It’s fascinating that my assumption towards the book was different from the content of it.

5) What is your all-time favorite book/novel and why? Do you repeat reading it?

Right now my number one on my favorite book list, it’s “City of Bones”, a Shadowhunters series by Cassandra Clare. The very first book that made me in love with the whole Shadowhunters world.

6) Would you recommend your favorite book/novel to other bookworms?

I think all the bookworms around the world already read it. The City of Bones is an amazing book by Cassandra Clare. The way she’s building the world and the characters is a masterpiece. I think once you read it, you will be curious and need the next book of the series to read. As the world she’s building getting bigger, the stories becoming more intriguing and you will dive into it automatically.

7) Who is your favorite author?

Obviously, it’s Cassandra Clare at the moment.

8) What ambiance do you prefer for reading? Quiet at home? Or somewhere green and serene?

I enjoy reading a book at night before bed.

9) How’s the reading culture in your country?

The reading culture in Indonesia, it’s more and more become a daily ritual in many big cities, but the smaller cities are adjusting slowly. The way books are seen as a very expensive thing, I think the reason why people from middle to the lower economic class family did not see reading as a priority in their life.

10) Do you have any ideas on how to improve the reading culture in your country?

Reducing the price of the book so everyone from every corner of Indonesia could reach it. Again, it’s not as easy as I wish, but right now the literacy community here is growing rapidly and making so many literary events in every region in the hope to educate people that reading is also important and fun.

Ok, that's all the questions I have for this bookworm interview. Thank you for participating, Amira. I wish you all the best in your career and future. Please keep up the good work.

    1. I also believe that the point is a very good idea to boost reading culture in a country. The Malaysian govt should implement that.

  2. I think the only novels I've ever read were from the Little Vampire series, which I read in primary school. Since then I've only read non-fiction

    1. It’s ok if novels/fictions aren’t your thing. Non-fiction are still books. I read both. But i’m more into fictions. I just love learning the fun way.

  3. I think a title like "Mates, Dates, and Inflatable Bras" would be a must buy for my teenage self as well! How widespread are e-readers or Kindles in Indonesia but digital books are often cheaper than physical copies (although I much prefer the feel of a real book!). Salam Eid Al-Hajj, Fadima :)

    1. Same here. But tell you what.....we all do judge a book by its cover. Cover plays an important role in book marketing. And they are a summary of what’s inside the book. That's why most authors invest on covers.
