SEVEN FICTION BOOKS FOR ADVENTURE ENTHUSIASTS

Dr. Seuss once quoted, "The more you read, the more things you will know. The more that you learn, the more places you'll go." Yep, reading opens doors into other worlds. People can easily travel anywhere they want by reading. And this is one of the benefits of reading. Reading takes you to places you wish to visit and have never been to, places that truly exist in this world, places that are created by authors. Plus, reading also allows you to travel back in time.

In this post, I will share a list of seven fiction books you must not miss if you call yourself an adventure enthusiast. These books have the power to give you the adventure that you seek. Now let's begin the list...

PS: I have something important to share at the end of this post. So please read it till the end ^_^

#1 AROUND THE WORLD IN 80 DAYS BY JULES VERNE

If you dream of being a voyager and wish to travel the world, Around The World In 80 Days (ATWIED) by Jules Verne is the perfect book for you to read. This novel was first published in 1872, and it is now listed as a classic and evergreen read. The story took place during the Victorian era in England. It followed a London gentleman named Phileas Fogg. Phileas set a bet with his friends to travel the world in 80 days or less. And if he succeeds, his friends must give him 20,000 PS each. For the journey, Phileas was only accompanied by his French valet, Passepartout. The adventure turned into chaos when someone who resembled Phileas robbed the bank. Scotland Yard thought Phileas was the bank robber. One of Scotland Yard's detectives, Mr. Fix, followed Phileas and Passepartout on their quest, hoping to arrest them. On his adventure, Phileas learned a lot of new things about life. He met a lot of interesting people on his adventure as well, including Aouda, with whom he had an instant connection.

Reading ATWIED can take you on an imaginary quest around the world. FYI, I traveled the world in less than 24 hours by reading this book. Hehehe ^_^ Besides traveling the world, reading ATWIED also allows me to travel back to the Victorian era. At that time, different kinds of transportation were introduced and opening up new possibilities for rapid travel and global tourism. Wow! It's interesting to learn about the technologies we use in our daily lives nowadays, and when it was first introduced during the Victorian era. It makes us appreciate innovation even more. This is how Jules Verne got his inspiration to write the story. Besides adventures, ATWIED also taught me about humanity and integrity. At the end of the story, Phileas Fogg discovered that the biggest treasure that he achieved during the journey was not the money he won, but the love and soulmate he found. Yes, Aouda was the biggest treasure that Phileas found during his quest.

#2 THE TALE OF GENJI BY LADY MURASAKI SHIKIBU

If you're a culture vulture kind of adventurer and obsessed with Japan, The Tale of Genji (TTOG) by Lady Murasaki Shikibu is a novel you must not miss. This novel taught you everything about Japan ~ the history, the culture, the people. Almost everything! Reading this book will not just take you to Japan, but it will take you to ancient Japan instead. Yep, TTOG is set in ancient Japan.

TTOG is a biographical novel, and it tells the story of a half-blood prince named Hikaru Genji, who was the son of Emperor Kiritsubo and a low-ranking but beloved concubine. Genji manifests what was to become an image of the ideal Heian period courtier. Genji was portrayed as gentle and passionate. He was also a master poet, dancer, musician, and painter. Genji embodied all the elegance and talent expected of an aristocratic courtier. Genji was a philanderer who lived for the quest of love. TTOG follows Genji through his many loves and varied passions.

One of the reasons why you must not miss TTOG is that this novel is one of the oldest in the world. It was written during the 11th century. If you are a fan of classic literature, TTOG is a novel you must not miss. Like my mother said, "your literature reading won't be complete without The Tale Of Genji". Yep, my mother insists me of reading this novel. And I'm glad I followed her recommendation. Thank you for making my literature reading complete, Mum ^_^

#3 MISTERI DIARI HITAM BY MAK CHANTEK

Wilayah Persekutuan Kuala Lumpur is not the only must-visit state in Malaysia. Malaysia is a country that offers travellers a lot of interesting states, places, and sights to visit. And one of the must-visit states in Malaysia is Perak. Perak is located on the north side of Peninsular Malaysia. The state is rich with cultures and history. Perak is an interesting state for foreign travelers to visit. If you wish to travel to Perak, read Misteri Diari Hitam (MDH) by Mak Chantek.

MDH/ The Mysterious Black Diary is a thrilling urban fantasy novel. The story is set in Kuala Kangsar, Perak. But the protagonist travels almost all around the state to search for her identity. Yes, reading this novel will take you on a Perak quest. The story follows a young divorcee named Puspa Wangi. Puspa has led a lonely life since the day she was born. Puspa was raised by her grandmother, and she never knew who her parents were. In fact, Puspa never knew her identity~ her origin, where she came from, etc. Not knowing her identity and parents makes Puspa curious, and it takes her on a quest to discover herself.

MDH is not just an urban fantasy novel with adventures. It's a story about self-discovery, spiritual awakening, and soul healing. Besides traveling to Perak, you can also travel to the elf realm by reading MDH. The way the author describes the elf realm in her story makes you want to visit there. The elf realm is just so magical and peaceful. Hehehe ^_^ I just finished reading this novel two weeks ago and haven't written the review of it yet. #4 THE ALCHEMIST BY PAULO COELHO

If you're fascinated with Southern Spain, Morocco, and Egypt, and dream to visit the pyramids, the Sahara desert, and the Al Fayoum oasis, The Alchemist by Paulo Coelho will be a perfect read for you. The story begins in Andalusia, Spain. A young Spanish shepherd named Santiago always dreamed of becoming rich and powerful. One night, he had an extraordinary dream. The dream was too good and meaningful for Santiago. It led him to meet an old gypsy. Santiago asked the gypsy to analyze his dream. The gypsy told Santiago that he will one day discover a valuable tresure at one of the pyramids in Egypt. The treasure will make Santiago the person he has always dreamed of being. What the gypsy said motivate Santiago to go on a quest.

During his adventure, Santiago faced sunshine and storms. He met many interesting people who taught him about life that he never knew before. The Alchemist is not just an adventure story. It's about self-discovery and spiritual awakening. Yep, adventures help people discover their soul.  Adventures also lead people to their homecoming. I believe these are the messages that Paulo Coelho wants his readers to bring home.

The Alchemist was first published back in 1988. Oh wow! I was only two years old at that time. This novel is now listed as an evergreen read. Like The Tale Of Genji, this novel was recommended by my mother. And I'm grateful that I've read it. It is an amazing book to read indeed.

#5 PARADISE BY ABDULRAZAK GURNAH

If you're always fascinated with Africa and dream of traveling in a caravan, Abdulrazak Gurnah's Paradise is a book you must not miss. The story took place in Kawa, Tanzania, before World War I. It followed a 12-year-old boy named Yusuf, who was sold by his father to a powerful Arab merchant named Mr. Aziz. Later in the story, Yusuf joined Mr. Aziz on a caravan journey. Together with Mr. Aziz and his workers, Yusuf traveled far to Central Africa and the Congo Basin. During his travels, Yusuf met different kinds of African tribes, wild animals, and faced difficult terrains.  Yusuf also learned the ways of the world as he encountered an Africa rife with tribal warfare, superstition, disease, child slavery, and marriage.

Like The Alchemist, Paradise is also about self-discovery. Yusuf discovers himself throughout his adventure. Paradise is Abdulrazak Gurnah's fourth novel. This novel was published in 1994, and it was shortlisted for the 1994 Booker Prize Award and the Whitbread Prize for Fiction. And like The Alchemist, this novel is another recommendation from my mom. And yes, Paradise is a must read, guys. It's a brilliant novel indeed. I'm grateful that my mom made me read this amazing book.

#6 ORAKEL DEWATA BY YUDA ARENI

If you're tired of the real world and need to escape, read Orakel Dewata by Yuda Areni. Once you open the book, you will instantly be transported to Benua Mithra, a fantasy world created by the author and inspired by the orient star. And once you enter Benua Mithra, you will go on a voyage with Aryan (the ML), Elfarish, and Nek Yan to Varuna Island. Aryan and his friends are looking for the perfect cure to heal Elfarish's mother, Melur, from the Bokor Curse. The cure can only be found at Varuna Island. Besides joining Aryan and his friends, you will also join Princess Ariana (the FL), Elfiara, and Mak Inang on a revengeful quest. Ariana is looking for the person who killed her father.

Orakel Dewata is one of the best books I've read in 2023. This epic fantasy novel by Yuda Areni is a work of art. The world-building, the characters, the plot, the storyline, and the scenes in this story are just awesome. I also describe Orakel Dewata as a fantasy version of Around the World in 80 Days. And I can simply relate the author's writing style to Jules Verne's. And yes, Orakel Dewata is a novel all fantasy addicts and adventure enthusiasts must not miss.

#7 THE LITTLE PRINCE BY ANTOINE DE SAINT-EXUPÉRY

I watched The Little Prince movie with my buddies back in 2016. I was so fascinated with the movie, and it motivated me to read the book as well. And if you're always fascinated with the galaxies and celestial, and dream of traveling from planet to planet, The Little Prince is a novel you must add to your TBR. Plus, this novel is already an evergreen and classic read. So why not?

The story is about a young prince who travels to various planets, including Earth, and learns a lot of things about life. The Little Prince is more than just about adventure. The author addresses loneliness, friendship, love, and loss in the story. Even though The Little Prince is geared towards children, the story makes observations about life, adults, and human nature. This makes the novel suitable for all ages. I'm glad that I chose to read this novel. This novel is an eye-opener for me. It makes me see life differently. The Little Prince is now listed as one of my favorite all-time reads.
