THE INTERVIEW

1) When did you first start reading for pleasure?

I love to read since I was a child and because of that, I have collected thousands of books now. I started to love reading a lot by reading comic books because it had an illustration and the stories were fun too. Then I began to enjoy reading poetry books and novels. For me through reading, I can learn a lot of things and it inspired me in so many ways! I’m happy I take up reading seriously, that’s where I started to enjoy writing, and now I am blessed to be able to publish my own book, and it all started through my love of reading!

2) That's cool. So what is the first book/novel you read?

The very first book I read I think was my brother’s Dragon Ball series-the well-known comic book of all time! Although it is a comic book I find it so interesting and I think for me, it ignites my passion for reading, and from there on, I can read almost anything, as long as I can read and enjoy the stories.

3)  What genre do you read?

To be honest, I read almost everything, and I appreciate every genre out there. My top genres would be poetry, motivational, self-help, novel, mystery, and thriller.

4) Do you judge a book by its cover?

Yes, I do, if I’m looking for new authors or in the mood of collecting new and pretty books. There are billions of books out there and many of the book covers are fabulous. Nonetheless, if it is authored by my favorite authors, I usually will just grab it, most importantly what’s on the inside and what you can gain from the stories you have read.

5) What is your all-time favorite book/novel and why? Do you repeat reading it?

I have the top three favorite books of all time. First, is A. Samad Said poetry books, he inspired me a lot to write evocative poetry in Bahasa Malaysia. Second is poetry books by Tyler Knott, he inspired me to write beautiful and meaningful poems in English. Third, is motivational books by Diana Rikasari, our writings are a lot similar, and she also inspires me to be more creative in my delivery.

6) Wow...you have a good taste in books. So would you recommend your favorite books to other bookworms?

Of course, great things are meant to be share! I recommend all bookworms out there to grab these books because they may inspire you too, especially if you are into writing the same genre as I do. To add, I just authored a book, A Book of Life. I recommend you get my book too and I hope it will inspire you to be the best version of yourself J

7)  Who is your favorite author?

Out of all the authors out there, I have 2 favorite authors. Number 1 is A. Samad Said and Number 2 is Tyler Knott. Both are excellent in writing poetry and I just simply love their masterpieces.

8) Wow...looks like you're a big fan of poetry. So what ambiance do you prefer for reading?

I prefer to be in a relaxed and peaceful environment when I’m reading so I can truly concentrate and be in ‘that world’ that the author wants me to be in. The best places for me are at home, a nice coffee shop, by the swimming pool or by the beaches.

9) How’s the reading culture in your country?

This is a good and important question. The reading culture in my country is considerable okay. Malaysians do read as our country’s literacy rate stood at 95% but are we reading enough to stimulate intellectual capacity, that’s the question.

10) Do you have any ideas on how to improve the reading culture in your country?

In this digital age, people are focusing to read more digital materials and shift their reading habits online. Whenever you go you can see people are glued to their smartphones. I seldom see people holding a book and read these days, very rare unless I’m going to the library, which mostly there are fewer people there too. We need to instill the habits of reading especially reading informative materials, online or offline, and to perform many initiatives and campaigns to promote and boost reading habits in the country. We need to really make people understand that by reading more (especially informative materials), “today a reader, tomorrow a leader”, and we definitely need more leaders to develop the country and the world in a wider perspective.

Ok, so these are the questions I have. Thank you for sharing your knowledge of books, opinions on the reading culture in Malaysia with me, Sofia. You have a good taste in books. I hope to collaborate with you again one day.  All the best in your career and future.

Saya pun dulu masa remaja memang ulat buku sampaikan dalam almari pun ada ruang khas untuk letak buku. Zaman tu penulis paling top Ahadiat Akashah. A Samad Said tu semestinyalah tak boleh dinafikan karyanya. Apapun all the best . Memang satu perkongsian yang sangat menarik untuk dibaca.
