ABOUT THE ALCHEMIST

The Alchemist is Coelho's fourth novel. The novel was first published in 1988. The Alchemist was originally written in the Portuguese language. The novel was later translated into English and became an international bestseller. The Alchemist is now listed as a modern-day literature novel.

The Alchemist novel belongs in the self-discovery genre. The story began in Andalusia, Southern Spain. The protagonist of this story was Santiago, a young shepherd boy who wished to become rich and achieve more than what he already had.

At the beginning of the story, Santiago had an extraordinary dream. He later consulted a Gypsy fortune-teller about the meaning of his dream. The fortune-teller told Santiago that he will discover a valuable treasure at the Egyptian pyramids. The treasure will make him the man he wishes to be.

The fortune-teller's interpretation made Santiago excited and want to travel to Egypt. Before Santiago began his journey, the boy met an old man named Melchizedek. Melchizedek told Santiago that he was the King Of Salem. Melchizedek also told Santiago to sell his sheep to him. And Santiago agreed.

Early on his arrival in Africa, Santiago got robbed by a man who claimed that he can take the boy to the pyramids. Because of that, Santiago had to work for a crystal merchant to earn some money to get to the pyramids.

Later in the story, Santiago met an Englishman who had come in search of an alchemist. After the Englishman, Santiago met a beautiful Arabian girl named Fatima. Santiago fell in love with Fatima and asked her to marry him. Fatima promised to marry Santiago after he completed his journey. Fatima became Santiago's new goal.

Towards the end of the story, Santiago met a wise 200 years old alchemist. The wise old man taught the boy to realize his true self. Together, they continued their journey. In the final chapter, Santiago reached the pyramids. The boy was excited and begin to search for his treasure. While Santiago was busy digging, the boy got robbed again. The thieves told Santiago that the treasure he was looking for was not there. It was all along in the ruined church where he had his original dream.

MY REVIEW OF THE ALCHEMIST

The Alchemist novel was given to me as a present from my mom. I'm grateful that my mom made me read this novel. The Alchemist is a very intellectual novel about self-discovery, life, and dreams.

The Alchemist is also full of adventure. The author's writing for this novel allows you to travel with the protagonist. I can feel myself being transported to Southern Spain, Africa, and Egypt while reading this novel. The adventure in The Alchemist also makes this novel very enjoyable to read.

Besides the storyline and plot, I also like Coelho's writing style in this novel. Coelho's writing style is very simple. The way Coelho describes the scenes in this novel makes it easy for me to understand and visualize the story.

Overall, I believe The Alchemist is a very brilliant novel. It is one of the best self-discovery novels I've read so far. Reading The Alchemist makes me learn about myself and my dreams as well.

I rate this novel 10/10. I highly recommend this novel to my fellow bookworms. The Alchemist is a novel you must not miss, guys. If you like The Little Prince by Antoine de Saint-Exupery, Paradise by Abdulrazak Gurnah, and Demian by Hermann Hesse, you will like The Alchemist too.

Ok, so this is my review of Paulo Coelho's The Alchemist. I hope this review will make you guys want to read this novel. And by the way, I have four questions for my readers before I end this post...

1) Have you guys read The Alchemist by Paulo Coelho?

2) If yes, what are your opinions of the novel? Did you enjoy reading it?

3) Are you guys into the self-discovery genre?

4) If yes, what is your favorite self-discovery novel?

Ok, this is all for now. Thank you for reading. I'll see you guys again in my next post. Take care.

XoXo,

Fadima Mooneira ^_^

  20. This is not a book I've read before, but I've certainly heard of The Alchemist by Paulo Coelho. To be honest, the self-discovery genre is not on my radar, but it may well be now, as I think that it's something I would like to take a shot at, it does sounds like an interesting story, especially with the travel element in there. I love how the main character wanted more out of live, and all it took was for him to meet the women he was to spend the rest of his live with, and his priorities would change. It's going on the list.
