FIVE THINGS THAT MAKE JANE AUSTEN’S PRIDE & PREJUDICE AN EVERGREEN READ

Jane Austen's Pride And Prejudice was first published in 1813. The novel immediately became popular when it was first published. The plot, characters, writing style, and themes remain relatable to readers today. Pride And Prejudice has become one of the most popular novels in English literature.

This novel has never gone out of print since the date it was released. It has now sold over 20 million copies, has inspired many derivatives in modern literature, and has consistently appeared in lists of the most-loved books of all time.

Pride And Prejudice follows the Bennet family. And the story takes place in England during the 19th century. Mr. Bennet owns an estate in Hertfordshire and has five daughters. But his property is entailed and can only be passed to a male heir. Mr. Bennet's wife also lacks an inheritance. So the Bennet family might become poor after Mr. Bennet passed away. To save the Bennet family, one of the daughters must marry well. And this is the motivation for the story's plot.

The second daughter of the Bennet family, Elizabeth is the main character of the story. She is bright, quick-witted, gutsy, and sassy. But she's also judgemental. When Elizabeth first meets Fitzwilliam Darcy (the male protagonist and love interest), she is not impressed by him at all. To Elizabeth, Mr. Darcy is proud and arrogant. In fact, she believes he is the most arrogant man in the world. Oh, dear! Elizabeth's misjudgment of Mr. Darcy drives the book's love story.

Pride And Prejudice is one of my all-time favorite reads. I first read this novel when I was only 16 years old. Recently, I read this novel again for the third time. So now, I'm going to share with you guys the five things that make Pride And Prejudice an evergreen read. Now let's check out the five things...

#1 ELIZABETH BENNET'S CHARACTER

Elizabeth Bennet has consistently appeared in lists of the most-loved heroines of all time. Most literature experts describe Elizabeth as an amazing female protagonist and believe she is a good role model to young girls. Elizabeth is intelligent, bright, quick-witted, gutsy, sassy, honest, and a go-getter. She is the kind of girl who knows what she wants and will always go for her goals.

#2 THE STORY PORTRAYS A HEALTHY FAMILY RELATIONSHIP

One of the things that make Pride And Prejudice so enjoyable to read is that the story portrays a healthy family relationship. The Bennets are such a loving family. They love, take care and support each other so well. The Bennets' love for each other helps the family to overcome their problem and achieve their goal at the end of the story.

#3 PRIDE AND PREJUDICE IS THE MOTHER OF ALL ROM-COMS

Pride And Prejudice belongs to the romantic comedy genre. And most literature experts believe that this story is the mother of all romantic comedies.  Girl-meets-guy and from-enemies-to-lovers are the themes of this story.  This Jane Austen classic has inspired many modern romantic comedies. If you are a rom-com writer, Pride And Prejudice is a novel you must not miss. Besides it gives you inspiration, it also helps you to study the romantic comedy genre. One of the reasons why I decided to reread Pride And Prejudice is because I'm now writing a rom-com. And yes, my second WIP is a romantic comedy and it is a Pride And Prejudice inspired ^_^

#4 THE MEMORABLE QUOTES

The moment when Elizabeth accepts Mr. Darcy's proposal. It's my favorite scene in the story ^_^

Besides the plot, storyline, characters, writing style, and themes, Pride And Prejudice is also popular for its memorable quotes. The quotes in this story have now become icons to readers today, especially the proposal quote. It is so romantic and dreamy. Please watch the video above, guys ^_^

#5 MR. DARCY'S CHARACTER

The love interest and male protagonist, Mr. Darcy has also consistently appeared in lists of the most-loved heroes of all time. Mr. Darcy is the pioneer alpha male hero. He is dreamy. He is swoon-worth. He is crush-worthy. Like most alpha male heroes, Mr. Darcy is brave, courageous, quick-witted, charismatic, intelligent, confident, and suave. He is a man who has it all. But he is also humble at heart and kind-hearted. Most women who have read Pride And Prejudice admit that they have a crush on Mr. Darcy. Well, I can't blame them. Mr. Darcy is a dream hero indeed. Even I have a crush on him too. He is always listed as one of my all-time favorite book heartthrobs in classic literature.

Ok, so these are the five things that make Jane Austen's Pride And Prejudice an evergreen read. As a huge fan of Jane Austen, I have read all of her novels during my teenage years. And since I've reread Pride And Prejudice, I plan to reread all Jane Austen novels as well. Insya-Allah, my next Jane Austen reread will be Emma ^_^

Before I end this post, let me ask my readers some related questions:-

1) Are you guys a fan of Jane Austen too?

2) If yes, what is your favorite Jane Austen novel?

3) And who is your favorite Jane Austen hero? And why?

Ok, this is all for now. Thank you for reading this post. I'll see you guys again in my next post. Take care ^_^

  1. I agree with you, it is most definitely an evergreen read as the themes are very much understandable and relatable today. There is obviously some historical differences but those are secondary to how the story connects through the themes of love, family, personal growth and relationships. Great post!

  2. I'm not familiar with British literature but from what I hear of this novel, it's a must-read. Thank you for sharing. I watched Mr. Darcy's proposal of marriage and it is very touching. Men of this caliber aren't the most common in real life, but it's nice to see.
