THE INTERVIEW

When did you first start reading for pleasure?

My parents read storybooks to me as a child, and I was eager to learn how to read them for myself. I began reading simple books at 5. I’ve been an avid reader ever since.

What is the first book you read?

I can’t remember for sure, but I loved The Cat in the Hat and other books by Dr. Seuss. I read them all. The first adult-length novel I read was The Swiss Family Robinson, which I read at age 10.

Oh wow...Cat In The Hat is also one of my all-time favorite books. So what genre do you read?

I read widely, but my favorite is historical fiction. I prefer historical thrillers, adventures, and mysteries, rather than romances. My favorite eras are medieval times and ancient Rome.

Do you judge a book by its cover?

Yes and no. I admit the cover can snag my interest, but when selecting books for myself I always read reviews. When I’m sorting donated books at the library, I definitely use the cover to sort for both genres and how long ago it was published. It’s easier to judge fiction books by their cover than non-fiction.

What is your all-time favorite novel and why?

My favorite since middle school is The Lord of the Rings. The story was on a grander scale than any book I’d read before, so it totally captured my imagination.

That's awesome! Do you repeat reading it?

I think I’ve read it at least twelve times, including once to my children. I’ve attached a photo of my well-worn copies.

Would you recommend your favorite novel to other bookworms?

Yes! Tolkien created such a vivid and detailed world. It’s a grand saga of good vs. evil.

Who is your favorite author?

It’s so difficult to pick just one. Some of my current favorites include Elizabeth Peters, Lindsey Davis, and Bernard Cornwell.

What ambiance do you prefer for reading? Quiet at home? Or somewhere green and serene?

I prefer quiet when reading. I can’t concentrate as well with music or conversation in the background. I mostly read at home, but I enjoy reading outside, too. I’ve read plenty of books sitting at the beach or at a campsite in the woods.

How’s the reading culture in your country?

With modern technology, the definition of reading has expanded. Many people, like my husband, “read” by listening to audiobooks during their commute. Downloadable audiobooks and e-books have made it easier to access books of all types. But statistics show that book reading is on the decline. I’m not sure today’s children will be readers, since they use tablets and smartphones to entertain themselves rather than library books and being read to by their parents.

I agree with you. Modern technology spoils the reading culture. Do you have any ideas on how to improve the reading culture in your country?

One issue that could be improved is Literature class. Lit teachers can squelch students’ love of reading by forcing them to read classics that are too outdated and tedious to be either enjoyable or relevant. Surely teachers can find modern works that display good literary techniques. I’m a fan of Shakespeare and classics, but forcing them on students isn’t going to inspire a love of literature.

Ok, that's all the questions I have for this interview. Thank you, Lisa, for participating in this interview. I am and will always be grateful to have you here as my guest star. I wish you all the best in your writing career. Pls, keep up the good work.

  12. Scallywag is a great name for a cat, although I didn't think anyone use that would outside of the UK. I also agree listening to audiobooks isn't reading, it's listening. You don't read a radio broadcast, you listen to it

  21. Lovely interview! I have to read in the quiet as well just like Lisa. As an elementary teacher, I have seen a decline in reading at home in the U.S. as well, but I'm hopeful that teachers will do a better job of keeping the reading spark alive from a young age.

    1. I see. Yeah, I hope the same. The reading culture in Malaysia is very bad now. Not many people likes to read nowadays. They always give the reason “too busy to read”. I think that is totally sucks.
