NOVEL REVIEW: COLD-HEARTED RAKE BY LISA KLEYPAS

Eiyo dearies,

Welcome back to Fadima Mooneira. Looks like time flies by really fast. It’s going to be the middle of January soon. How are you guys doing? I hope you guys are doing good. Syukur alhamdulillah. I’m doing good as well.

Today, I’m going to share my review of a historical romance novel I finished reading last week. The novel is titled Cold-Hearted Rake and it is written by my favorite romance author, Lisa Kleypas. Now let’s begin this review with Lisa Kleypas’ bio…

ABOUT LISA KLEYPAS

Historical Romance Queen ~ Lisa Kleypas (Image: lisakleypas.com)

Lisa Kleypas is a RITA (Romance Writer Of America) award-winning author of both historical romance and contemporary women's fiction. Her novels are published in 14 different languages and are bestsellers all over the world. Kleypas is an alumnus of Wellesley College. She graduated with a Bachelor's Degree in Political Science. She became Miss Massachusetts in 1985. Kleypas lives in Washington with her husband, Gregory, and two children.

ABOUT COLD-HEARTED RAKE

Cold-Hearted Rake (CHR) is the first book in Lisa Kleypas’ Ravenel series. The story is set in England during the late Victorian era. Devon Ravenel, London’s most charming and wicked rake, has just inherited an earldom from his late cousin, Theo.

Devon is not looking forward to inheriting the earl title. His powerful new rank in society comes with unwanted responsibility and more than a few surprises. Devon’s new estate, Eversby Priory is saddled with debt. The late earl’s beautiful young widow, Kathleen, Lady Trenear & her three unmarried sisters-in-law are still living in the house.

Devon is attracted to Kathleen during their first meeting. To Devon, Kathleen is a beauty and the most amazing woman he has ever met. Kathleen looks like a flower. But she is actually as feisty as a bee. She’s one thought cookie for Devon to please.

But that doesn’t stop Devon from pursuing his objective. And the fiery attraction between them is impossible to deny. From the moment Devon holds Kathleen in his arms, he vows to do whatever it takes to possess her. Will Kathleen surrender her heart to the most wicked rake she has ever known? Is Devon sincere with Kathleen? Or is she just a bystander in his erotic fantasy?

MY REVIEW OF THE COLD-HEARTED RAKE

Overall, CHR is a very enjoyable historical romance and josei novel to read. Like all LK novels I’ve read, this one is also fun, chic, and entertaining. And to be honest, this novel has the sexiest and steamiest romance scenes compared to all LK novels I’ve read before.

I like Devon Ravenel’s character arc in CHR. Devon was portrayed by Kleypas as a heartless rake at the beginning of the story. But then he changed into a romantic hero towards the end of the story. Chapter 32 is my favorite chapter in the novel. It’s the chapter where Devon realized his feelings for Kathleen and how far she has changed him. Also in that chapter, Devon realized that he does want to get married and started a family with Kathleen. He wants to love and cherish Kathleen with care. Auwww… that is so sweet ^_^

Even though Devon is portrayed as an aggressive lover throughout the story, I still find him attractive and dazzling. I know most female readers do not like Devon for this. Most female readers said the way Devon treats and seduces Kathleen in the story is too aggressive and barbaric. It makes the story less flowery. These are the comments given by most female readers on GoodReads about CHD and Devon Ravenel’s character.

Well, Devon Ravenel is indeed aggressive in romance compared to other LK heroes. But even though Devon is aggressive, I still can sense his sincerity towards Kathleen. I like that Devon is not the type of guy who gives up easily. He is a brave and courageous hero indeed. Most important he proves his sincerity to Kathleen.

Last but not least, I rate this novel 8/10. I do enjoy reading Cold-Hearted Rake by Lisa Kleypas. I highly recommend this novel to those who are into the historical romance genre. But I also need to be honest that there are some highly steamy romance scenes in this novel. So it is not suitable for those who are under 18.

Ok, so this is my review of Cold-Hearted Rake by Lisa Kleypas. Another historical romance and josei novel that I enjoyed. Before I end this post, I would like to ask my readers 3 related questions.

1)    Has anyone of you read Cold-Hearted Rake by Lisa Kleypas?

2)    If yes, what are your opinions of Devon Ravenel’s character?

3)    Do you think that he is an aggressive lover and not good for Kathleen?

Please feel free to share your answers in the comment box below with me. I’m looking forward to reading your opinion of Devon Ravenel’s character.

Besides questions, I also would like to do one shameless self-promo before I end this post. I recently created a playlist on Spotify for my novel, Fail Merah. So you guys can now listen to some music while reading Fail Merah. To check out Fail Merah's playlist, please click on this link >> FAIL MERAH PLAYLIST ON SPOTIFY

FYI, I’m now reading Marrying Winterborne, another historical romance novel by Lisa Kleypas. Marrying Winterborne is the second book in the Ravenel series. So far, I’m loving the novel. I even love it more than Cold-Hearted Rake. Insya-Allah, I will share my review of the novel after I finish reading it. So don’t miss out ^_^

This is all for now. Thank you for reading my review. I’ll see you guys again in my next post.

XoXo,

Fadima Mooneira ^_^

NOVEL REVIEW: DEVIL IN WINTER BY LISA KLEYPAS

Comments

  1. As you mentioned, Devon was portrayed as a heartless rake at the beginning of the novel, and later developed into a romantic hero. You will find Devon to develop into a loveable, brotherly character in the upcoming novels in the series. He's like everyone's favourite brother 😁😁😁
